Perhaps the most fast-paced social media channel in this world of face-paced social media channels is Twitter. In just 140 characters per tweet, Twitter gives bloggers plenty of opportunities to interact with fellow bloggers and readers, and the catch is, it lets you do it very quickly!

On Twitter, you want your messages to be short, sweet, and to the point. Save the articles for your blog and the novels for your soon-to-be-released eBooks. Image may be NSFW.

On this short-form media, it’s all about doing it right the first time, at the right time.

Choosing Your Handle

When choosing your handle, first consider your branding. In a perfect world, your Twitter account name will be your blog name. Still, you don’t want a handle that’s too long, because shorter ones are simply easier to remember and take up less space. If your blog name is too long, find a way to shorten it.

If you run into a problem where someone else has your handle, find an intuitive way to retain your recognition. Because unfortunately, it’s not a perfect world… just ask @TheBloggerBabes :(.

Following People and Getting Followers

Don’t wait for other people to follow you. When you follow an account, that account’s tweets are delivered to your feed instantly. Following people on Twitter spreads brand awareness. If you want people to know about you, interact with them. Interacting with your niche is good for your reputation—it builds authority, credibility, and good connections when you engage with your readers.

But where do you start?

  1. Start with people you already know. This is the easiest way to find people to follow; Twitter has search options optimized for this.
  2. Follow experts. Keep tabs on them and the trends that they follow. Don’t forget to interact with them, too!
  3. Follow your followers back. Why? Again, it builds relationships. Plus, they’ll be delighted to see you care enough to follow back.
  4. Take advantage of the search function. Twitter’s search function is really awesome. You can find conversations about your business and products by searching for keywords. Filter out those results by trying a variety of keywords. That way, you can find people who are talking about your brand—plus follow and interact with those people!
  5. Create lists to organize your follow feed. If you follow a ton of people, your feed might get a little cluttered… okay, it might get crazy. So, make sure you keep it all organized by creating lists.
  6. Listen more than you talk. With millions of Twitter users worldwide, it’s pretty much impossible to read everyone’s tweets. So set up keyword catches, such as TweetDeck or HootSuite (highly recommended—I’ll talk more about it in a soon-to-come post!). TweetDeeck helps you filter tweets based on the keywords you choose. That way, you can respond extremely quickly when someone mentions you or your brand, and you can prove that you’re invested in your blog—why else would you be so on top of things (however, be careful of responding to haters or getting into arguments on Twitter or any social media—it’s not good for your image or mental health, and just not worth your time).
